We are thrilled to announce that we recently won the Large Employer of the Year award at the Exeter College Apprentice & Employer Awards 2024. This is our first year in this category and we are delighted to have won!
At Simpkins Edwards, our apprenticeship programme is a source of pride. We have a great culture of training and developing our teams, with around 10% of our workforce being Apprentices. We've worked with Exeter College for over 20 years as an Apprentice employer, and it's been very successful; some of our fully qualified Chartered Accountants started as apprentices! Every year, we hire at least two apprentices, who are either school or college leavers, to work in one of our five Devon offices. We often exceed this goal and have hired 7 new apprentices since September 2022.
It’s a joy to see the team growing both personally and professionally, as they work through their studies supported by mentors in the business and through Exeter College. One of our team says
“My apprenticeship has equipped me not only with the correct skills, but also the correct professional attitude to pursue a successful career in Accountancy.”
Our apprentices have not only excelled in their day job, but also achieved remarkable success in the last year. We were thrilled to support five team members who participated in the World Skills UK competition, which aims to enhance technical skills and personal skills for the future generation. Our team reached the National Finals and won the gold medal! To celebrate their win, they recently enjoyed a day out of the office to visit London and attend a Winners reception at the Houses of Parliament. With opportunities like this, as well as presenting at events such as Women in Accounting and the Alternative Accountancy Management Summit, inspiring the next generation at careers fairs, and joining business networking and charity events including the Michelmores 5K, we’re proud to show our commitment to the Apprentice experience.
We would also like to congratulate Luke Freathy, the winner of our sponsored category – Apprentice of the Year (Accountancy, Business & Professional Services).
The investment made into each individual proves to be valuable, year after year, and we look forward to continuing our relationship with Exeter College and the Apprenticeship scheme. If you would like to find out more about our apprenticeship programme, get in touch.
